Program notes to Mikel Kuehn's Cycles

Cycles, for solo piano, composed in January through March of 1990, derives its title from the treatment of the material in its three brief movements. I was interested in creating a piece that would project a small group of structural ideas over contrasting textures in which the material would either be transformed, generated, or erased by a cyclic process. While the large-scale structure of each movement is cyclical, the overall work mirrors this process, and is divided into five arch-related sections: I:A, II:BCB, III:A.
