Program notes to Mikel Kuehn's CyclesCycles, for solo piano, composed in January through March of 1990, derives its title from the treatment of the material in its three brief movements. I was interested in creating a piece that would project a small group of structural ideas over contrasting textures in which the material would either be transformed, generated, or erased by a cyclic process. While the large-scale structure of each movement is cyclical, the overall work mirrors this process, and is divided into five arch-related sections: I:A, II:BCB, III:A. |
