Mark D. Petering (b. 1973)

Mark D. Petering began his composition training in 1989 with Distinguished Professor of Music, Dr. John Downey at the University of Wisconsin-MiIwaukee. In May of 1995, Mr. Petering received his B.A. in music composition from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where he studied with Maurice Monhardt. In August 1998 he received his M.M. in composition from Bowling Green State University in Ohio where he studied with Samuel Adler, Burton Beerman, Wallace DePue, Marilyn Shrude, and Peter Terry.

In 1991 his Fanfare for Youth was premiered by the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Philharmonia after this piece won second place in the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts Composition Contest. The Iowa Music Teachers Association awarded him first prize in 1993 for his Bass Clarinet Concertino. In 1996 the ASCAP Foundation Grants to Young Composers competition named him a finalist in its national contest for Duo for Violin. In August of 1995 his chamber workThe Tomten and the Fox - A Musical Tale for Children was premiered in Door County, Wisconsin at the Washington Island Music Festival. Its orchestral premiere was given by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in December of 1996 and has since been performed by the Buffalo Philharmonic and Seattle Philharmonic orchestras. Mr. Petering's Overture "Celebration" has been recorded by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Paul Freeman and is available on Albany Records' Paul Freeman Presents...Vol. 8. Recently Mr. Petering completed his first symphony commissioned by the PieperPower Foundation of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and is currently pursuing his PhD in composition at the University of Minnesota.

Mr. Petering has composed over seventy pieces, including works for orchestra, choir, chamber ensembles, voice and piano as well as for theater, dance, and electronic media. In his spare time he enjoys basketball, tennis, swimming and visiting with family and friends.
